Book Review: P.S. I Love You

In the best-selling book, P.S. I Love You, author Cecelia Ahern takes on a sad, happy and romantic journey. Main character, Holly, is the luckiest Irish girl in the world and married to her childhood sweetheart until something unthinkable occurs. Her husband, Gerry, a funny, kind, joyous guy who is adored by all that knew him gets gravely ill. He only has a short time to live, and he knows he’s going to die soon. Holly is devastated, but she stays by his side through the whole thing.

Because Gerry has an illness that told him he would pass away soon, he is able to set up a series of love letters for Holly before his death. He does all of this without Holly ever knowing. The book begins in the immediate aftermath of Gerry’s death and with the very first of his love letters. Gerry passes away not long before Holly’s 30th birthday. There are twelve letters, one for every month in the year after his death. Holly has to do a little investigating to find the letters sometimes. At one point she ends up at a travel agent, then going on a vacation with her friends. This was something that Gerry had planned beforehand as a gift.






It’s very difficult for Holly to move on after the love of her life passes, but with the letters that she gets to read each month, she is motivated to slowly change her life for the better. She understands she is a widow at this point, but she knows she has a chance at a fulfilled life even if Gerry is no longer there.

This is Cecelia Ahern’s very first novel, and it was met with rave reviews. She was able to very successfully put the reader in Holly’s shoes and create a realistic world in which a loved one has passed. All of the emotions come through with Ahern’s creative writing. In addition to the advancements in life that the character of Holly experiences, Holly is also brought closer to her family and friends, and at the very end of the novel, the prospect of new love is finally at least on the horizon. Many readers of P.S. I Love You were moved to tears throughout Holly’s transformation. It is beautifully written and well-crafted.

This book went on to become a best selling film that starred Hilary Swank and Kathy Bates. Reading is an fun pastime that will only make you more educated and smarter. P.S.
